What to know about an initial consultation

On Behalf of The Law Office of Shauna T. Hagan, LLC | Jan 20, 2021 | Divorce |

If you are planning on ending your Delaware marriage, the first step in the process is to meet with an experienced divorce attorney. The initial consultation is an opportunity for you to learn more about the person who may be representing you in such a proceeding. It also presents an opportunity for the attorney to review your case and help you learn more about your rights.

Provide as much information as possible

Ideally, you will bring to your first meeting financial statements, the title to your home and other documents that might be relevant to your divorce proceeding. Generally speaking, it is easier for an attorney to represent your interests when the specifics of your case are discussed in detail.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

The initial meeting is a great time to ask questions about an attorney’s philosophy as it relates to handling divorce legal issues. Ideally, you will work with someone who aims to resolve the matter in a timely and amicable manner. While you may not like your estranged spouse, there is rarely anything to gain by trying to punish them in court. This may be especially true if you have children.

Where does the consultation take place?

An initial consultation can take place over the phone, online or at an attorney’s office. You should expect to spend at least 15 to 30 minutes talking about the case and the various ways that it might be settled. However, consultations may run longer if you have a complex case or simply need more time to get the information that you need to make an informed decision.

The end of a marriage can have a significant impact on your financial, physical and emotional well-being. Therefore, it is generally in your best interest to do whatever it takes to obtain a favorable outcome in your case.
